There's no special trick to wearing a skinny tie. Overall, your tie should match the rest of your clothes, and not stand out too much.
To help you get it right, we enlisted East Dane's accessories buyer, John Wong. He has 3 fail-safe tips you need to know, which we have interspersed with skinny tie-and-shirt combinations for you to shop, below.
1. Think about how your tie fits in with the rest of your clothes
"When deciding on when to wear a skinny tie, it’s important to look at the suit and shirt that you’ll be wearing it with," Wong told us. More specifically, he says skinny ties should be worn with slim-cut suits that have narrow lapels and dress shirts that also have slim collars. "The scale of the tie should match the rest of the suit and shirt." Since skinny ties also often more casual than wider widths, it's okay to pair them with non-dress shirts, like J.Crew's cloth oxford.

2. Think about how your tie fits your body type
"Recognize the type of suit that is flattering on you," Wong says. "A great example is if you look at Adam Scott on Parks and Recreation, who pairs a skinny tie with his slim suits and classic oxford shirts that are perfectly tailored to his thinner frame. If Chris Pratt wore the same style, his height and build would overwhelm the suit and tie."

3. Think about how your tie fits where you're going to be wearing it
"A skinny tie is usually seen as more relaxed or more fashion forward. In this vein, you should always consider where you will be wearing it," Wong recommends. "You’re probably safe to wear a skinny tie if you work in a more creative or relaxed environment, such as an advertising or architecture firm, as opposed to a more traditional environment, such as an investment bank or law office." Summer weddings and alfresco dinner dates are also acceptable occasions to wear one.
